광복 80주년 기념 전시: 그래서 펼치다展
80th Liberation Anniversary Exhibition: “So It Unfolds”

August 15, 2025 marked the 80th anniversary of the National Liberation Day of Korea — commemorating liberation from Japanese colonial rule. I was invited as a global artist to be part of this exhibition organized by Typography Seoul. To think about how I would re-imagine the Korean flag, I reflected on what has united and divided Korea, and the layers that many types of reunions hold for Koreans around the world.

이 작품은 조선 왕조기의 원형에 경의를 표하며, 여덟 개의 괘를 마치달의 위상처럼 대칭적으로 배열하였습니다. 중심에는 대한민국의 국화인 무궁화가 자리하고, 그 꽃잎 속에서 네 개의주요 괘가 피어오르듯 펼쳐집니다. 조화는 무궁화가 피어날 수 있는 바탕이 되며, 이는 곧 민족의 정체성과 샌명력을 상징합니다. 분단 이전, 하나였던 한반도의 시각적 유산을 되짚으며, 새로운 시선으로 태극기가 어떻게 펼쳐질 수 있을지를 상상하고자 했습니다.

This design pays homage to the original flag of the Joseon Dynasty by including all 8 trigrams in opposite symmetry, arranged as if they were phases of the moon. At the center of the flag is a mugunghwa, the national flower of the Republic of Korea, with the main 4 trigrams emerging from the bloom. Harmony creates the backdrop that the mugunghwa can bloom within. It was important to me to look at visual examples of Korea when it was still a unified country when re-imagining how the flag could unfold.
