Biography

Amy Kim Delahanty (Fortunato • 김선혜) is a designer and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. Her practice and research explore the intersections of visualized narratives within cultural identity, translation, and multilingual typography in the context of design and pedagogy. Her work investigates how identity is enveloped in craft and experimentation through the poetics of handwork and reclamation.

Amy received her MFA in Visual Communication Design from Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea, and her BFA in Communication Arts with a minor in Art History from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, California. She is an alumna of the Korean Government Scholarship program.

She is currently an Assistant Professor of Design in the Art Department at Queens College CUNY in New York City, and Core Faculty in the Graphic Design MFA program at Vermont College of Fine Arts, a CalArts affiliate. Previously, she taught in the undergraduate Communications Design program at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, where she led curricular coordination for typography and co-planned the annual Pratt Show for Communications Design.

Amy has presented, or served as a guest critic, at the Asian American/Asian Research Institute, College Art Association, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Kookmin University (Seoul), LearnXDesign (Design Research Society Special Interest Group), Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD), Pratt Institute, and Sahmyook University (Seoul).

Experience living in Los Angeles, Seoul, and New York City forms the basis of her design practice, Fortunato Studio. Her projects primarily collaborate with institutions within the arts and cultural sector and non-profit organizations. Amy has been a longtime collaborator of Green Dragon Office, designing books with Lorraine Wild since 2011, including titles awarded by AIGA 50 Books/50 Covers. Her design work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collection of libraries around the world and the Asia Art Archive in America.
